How can
we keep our
kids safe online?

Overprotected in the real world and underprotected online, Gen Z is facing a mental health crisis. Technology platforms serve up harmful content that is creating a toxic digital environment for young people, driving many of the negative outcomes we see today: The known effects of growing up on smartphones and social media include loneliness, anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation, addiction, suicidal thoughts and actions, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. Reversing these trends requires legislative action – the Kids Online Safety Act enables a healthier digital ecosystem for our young people.
We must get KOSA pased by the time Congress leaves for the holidays this December. If we don’t, we won’t have another shot.
This bill was written by both Democrats and Republicans, and in 2024, the Senate passed it overwhelmingly, 91-3. It’s a very straightforward bill that puts in place protections for kids online, like regulating addictive features and harmful content.
Congress has not passed a major bill to protect children online since 1998. It’s up to all of us – parents, educators, school leaders and others – to call on the need to act now. That’s why Jonathan Haidt and our team are joining over 200 national, state, and local organizations to pass KOSA now. It’s time we provide the basic protections to keep our children and young people safe online and reverse these dangerous trends.
